Excellent August Water Test Results

27 August 2008

Third 2008 water samples were taken Monday, August 25, at about 11am.

Results are as follows:

#1 Dock 7 cfu
#2 Cedar Fork Creek 7 cfu
#3 Booker Creek 5 cfu

Caution level is individual reading above 400 cfu, or average above 200 cfu. TriTest (lab) will notify us if readings are above 100..

Lake water temp: 27.5-28 C, 80-82 F

SECCI Clarity: 17 inches on August 26

There was 1 inch in the Rain Gauge at 5pm on Tuesday, August 26

This is the last regularly scheduled water test for this season. We may run one more if the weather and water stay warm into October. It is unusual in a good way to get readings this low late in the season.

This morning after the hard rain, I noticed some bright yellow water in the Booker Creek forebay. On Monday when taking the samples, my subjective observation was that the water was unusually clear and devoid of the usual goose-down looking stuff that we normally see on the surface at this time of year. The docks were clean, thanks to the diligence of our weekend lake staff. By Tuesday afternoon, some rain had fallen and the clarity had quickly deteriorated, and the floating docks had a lot of goose waste. We are getting good water flow.

Whenever there is a hard rain, one concern is contamination from surface waste and lawn treatment, and another is silt runoff from construction. It seems that erosion control fencing has become more commonplace and hopefully our builders are getting adept at using it. Forebays are our primary method of control for silt that reaches the lake from upstream sources. The standpipes near the dam allow us to lower the lake water to manage local erosion. Lowering the lake is disruptive. The better we manage the erosion from construction near the lake, the less often we will have to use this process.
